Student Dormitories in Turkey

Turkey has provided various accommodation options for domestic and international students who wish to study in this country. These accommodations include state dormitories (KYK), Waqf (religious foundation) dormitories, private dormitories, and youth housing (apartments for rent).

1- State Student Dormitory (KYK) in Turkey

State Dormitory (KYK) is a student accommodation place administered by the KYK Foundation of the Turkish Ministry of Youth and Sports. These dormitories are very financially affordable, covering a monthly cost between 345 and 570 Turkish Lira. State dormitories operate under the supervision of the government and state universities of Turkey for domestic and international students. These dormitories, given the large number of students residing in them, are considered an economical and suitable option. Each room is usually allocated to a larger number of students (typically 8 people), which reduces the cost of accommodation. These dormitories offer the fewest facilities compared to other types of dormitories.

Advantages of staying in state dormitories include proximity to the university, low-cost or free meals, provision of cleaning and laundry services, free internet access, and provision of psychological and social support services. Also, students can stay in other state dormitories for 10 days. Some state dormitories are also open for the summer term and student activities in the summer. In this regard, you need to register to use the dormitories.

Disadvantages of State Student Dormitory in Turkey
Number of students per room is 8

2- Waqf Student Dormitory in Turkey

Waqf (religious foundation) dormitories are known as student accommodation centers under the supervision of the Turkish religious foundations. These dormitories have been built as a charitable project by the Turkish religious foundations and support Turkish and foreign students.
Vakif Student Dormitory, or Waqf student dormitories, are a type of dormitory established under the support and coverage of charitable and religious organizations in Turkey and are under their supervision. These dormitories operate in the cities of Antalya, Istanbul, and Izmir and are considered a suitable option for students who intend to study abroad. Waqf student dormitories provide more facilities compared to state dormitories but have fewer facilities compared to private dormitories. The cost of accommodation in these dormitories is lower than in private ones and are considered a more economical option. However, it is necessary to note that the rules of these dormitories are stricter and differ from the rules of state dormitories.

Advantages of Waqf student dormitories include order and strict rules, selection of students through interviews, possibility of accommodation for all students regardless of political orientation, and being more common in Istanbul, Antalya, and Izmir. These dormitories support students with meals and a warm environment but do not provide internet services. To be accepted into Waqf dormitories, an interview is mandatory, and only by succeeding in this interview can you proceed to reside in these dormitories. These dormitories, with a high level of security, are an ideal option for parents concerned about international students.

Among their disadvantages, the lack of free internet can be mentioned, but by providing meals and heating and cooling systems, these dormitories support students. Also, in some cases, discounts are offered to students, which can reduce the cost of accommodation.

3- Private Student Dormitory in Turkey

Private dormitories in Turkey are places for student accommodation that are under the management of private companies and provide comfort and tranquility to their residents. Private student dormitories in Turkey are managed by different companies and are not affiliated with the government. They are considered among the best options for students by providing distinguished services. These accommodations are established by private entities for domestic and international students and offer more facilities compared to other dormitories. This dormitory, like a second home, provides its residents with a comfortable and peaceful environment. The cost of accommodation in these dormitories is higher, and the number of residents per room is also lower. The facilities of these accommodations include a swimming pool, gym, study room, and lounge. The private services of this dormitory include serving meals (including free breakfast and lunch and dinner for a fee), providing internet services, laundry and room cleaning services, dedicated study and rest areas for students, and private space. To apply for private student accommodation, you just need to prove your acceptance from a Turkish university with official documents. To rent in these dormitories, international students must have an acceptance letter from a reputable university in Turkey.

4- Youth Housing in Turkey (Rented Apartments for Students)

Furnished student apartments in Turkey are an economical and popular option for domestic and international students. These apartments are offered at a lower cost compared to house rentals and are considered more cost-effective due to the sharing of accommodation costs among residents. These accommodations, despite having fewer facilities compared to dormitories, have a special appeal for young Arabs in Turkey.
Youth housing is also a suitable option for local and foreign students in Turkey. However, factors such as lower security and the absence of daily cleaning services can create challenges for residents. Costs such as water, electricity, gas, and internet are divided equally.
With these accommodations, students benefit from a calm and economical environment for living and studying in Turkey.

Disadvantages of Youth Housing in Turkey:

In terms of safety, residents of these accommodations must be careful of scams and theft due to the presence of unknown individuals. It is recommended not to carry large amounts of money with you.
Although youth housing may not be ideally hygienic due to the lack of cleaning services being the responsibility of the residents. Also, privacy in these accommodations is challenged due to the smaller number of residents (less than 4 people). In general, paying attention to these points and information helps travelers have a better and trouble-free accommodation experience in these accommodations.

Status of State Dormitories and University Dormitories:

State and university dormitories in Turkey are mainly provided separately for female and male students. The number of people in rooms varies, and prices may change based on the number of residents. Private dormitories offer more facilities compared to state dormitories, but their costs are higher. Immigrants and interns can also stay in private dormitories.
